Dr. Mace L. Bentley, an associate professor of integrated science and technology at James Madison University, has received a Fulbright Specialist grant award in environmental science. He will teach in Thailand from Nov. 23, 2014 to Jan. 3, 2015.

Bentley said he was chosen to share his “expertise on the impacts of climate change on Southeast Asia.”

Bentley will teach portions of courses in the horticulture department at Kasetsart University in Bangkok, which is ranked 33rd in the world for agriculture and forestry study in the 2013 QS World University Ranking. He will also conduct workshops for students, faculty and researchers who work in fields needing information on the causes, effects and mitigation of climate change.

“The goals for the program are twofold,” Bentley said, “to raise awareness of climate change and understanding of anticipated impacts in the region … and to promote education and exchange between myself, JMU and the faculty of agriculture at KU.”

Bentley teaches courses relating to climate change, physical geography and geography and film in the Geographic Science program at JMU. He believes that podcasts and vodcasts are essential tools for teaching, and emphasizes film as a medium for establishing “place” in the study of geography.
