Traffic Advisory and Blasting Notice

JMU News

The sidewalk that runs adjacent to Madison Hall along the North side of East Grace Street from Mason Street down to Main Street, and the sidewalk on the East side of Main Street from Grace Street to Martin Luther King Blvd will be closed beginning Thursday, August 25, 2016 through September 2016 due to blasting and construction projects in that area.

During blasting periods, which may occur Monday - Friday between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM, all Vehicle and Pedestrian Traffic may be temporarily stopped for just a few minutes on Grace Street from Mason Street to Walnut Lane, on S. Main Street from Bluestone Drive to MLK Jr Way and at times on MLK Jr Way between Mason Street and S. Main Street to keep the public safe.

Occupants of adjoining structures (i.e. Duke Hall) will be directed to use only the front lobby doors to access and exit the building during inside during the blast periods.  Residents of other facilities and properties along S. Main St between Grace St and MLK will be asked to remain indoors during the blast periods and will not be allowed on porches or rooves during blasting unless that area is deemed a safe distance from the blast by the blasting contractor and public safety officials.

A horn system will be used to alert people in the area of the pending blast. There will be 3 horn blows 1 minute before the blast. The blast will then be detonated. After we have inspected the blast area and know that everything is clear we will blow 1 long horn blow to signal an all clear. The horn used may be audible up to a half mile away.
