Crash Reports
- Your accident is reportable to the DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES; a copy of the report will be available 30 days after the date of your accident. A reportable accident is defined as any crash involving personal injury, death, or property damage in excess of $1,500, occurring on a public roadway. Reports are available to the driver(s), injured person(s), property owner(s), attorney(s), insurance companies, parent/legal guardian, authorized personal representatives or a person with written permission of an individual directly involved in the accident.

Submit a written request for a crash report to DMV or complete an Information Request Form (CRD93).

The written request must include:
- Accident involvement (e.g., driver, injured person, vehicle owner, etc.), Accident date, Accident Time and Location.
- Driver name(s)
- Driver’s license Number (must be provided if requester was involved in crash)

Freedom of Information Act
To request records from James Madison University, you may direct your request to Clay Sutton in the Office of University Communications. Criminal Arrest Records
The Department of Virginia State Police Central Criminal Record Exchange is the custodian of these records. Arrest records can be found in the Virginia Court system under Harrisonburg & Rockingham County. The website is http://www.courts.state.va.us/
Any report request must be requested through FOIA by emailing foia@jmu.edu
Once a report is requested through FOIA, the University FOIA Officer, will email it to the Chief who will then forward it to the records clerk who redacts ALL personal information and then emails it back to the Chief who will then send it to the University FOIA Officer for distribution.
Local Background Check
This background check will cover offenses the requester was convicted of only by the James Madison University Police Department. This does not include traffic offenses.
